At the end of Chapter Five, Nick makes much of the power of Daisy’s voice over Gatsby: “I think that voice held him most, with its fluctuating, feverish warmth, because it couldn’t be overdreamed—that voice was a deathless song” (p.96). Later on, Gatsby observes that “Her voice is full of money,” and Nick develops the point: “That was it, I’d never understood before. It was full of money—that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals’ song of it.” Is it possible for characters in Gatsby’s world to disentangle different kinds of value: In particular, do the social conventions and self-understandings of the main characters allow them to disentangle the material value associated with economic wealth, the value attributed to a human object of desire, the aesthetic value of a beautiful object, and the moral values by which one assesses a person’s character? Why, if it all, does this matter?

  1. The characters in the story develops strong relations with others and strongly chnage throughout the story. Many character reveal their plans or who they really are using color imagery and metaphors made by FITZGERALD. The characters in the story do hide behind economic wealth and values.
The characters in the story find themselves in many situations. The situations mostly concerns with money and wealth. The setting of the story takes place in a wealthy and poor setting. East Egg is where the new money lives and West Egg is the opposite. The characters hide behind money and wealth because of the characteristics that is yet revealed about them. Using money, characters like, Daisy and Tom, These characters are rich and they express their true characteristics within their clothes and their looks at other characters. The wealth that other characters have effects other characters and the setting as well.
The reason for characters using economic wealth and values is important becuase it tells the story about how life was like during that time.
many people relied on their wealth to keep them alive, but in the story, wealth cannot keep you alive for long because it effects the setting around them and the people around them as well.

  2. The characters in The Great Gatsby all seem to be hiding behind their wealth. Everyone seems to be wealthy, whether it be with new or old money. Gatsby especially hides behing his money. In reality, he is a kind and loving man with a dream that was already passed him. Though, he comes off as a mysterious and quiet man.

Myrtle is one of the characters in the novel that is not as wealthy as the others. She still tries to show confidence. She does this by constantly changing her outfit. She wants to be the main girl in Tom's life, though she knows she can't be.

The Buchanan's also hid behind their wealth. Their lives were chaotic and sad, but they did not show it to the public. Daisy knew about Tom's affair. Also, Daisy put up with his harsh attitude towards her. They covered it all up with their elaborate lifestyle, house, and clothing.

  3. The story brings out more about the people in the story for example Daisy who thinks that just becase she has money that life is good and that nothing can go wrong. In that shows alot about the 1920s rich people who think that if you have alot of money your life is perfect when its not all they do is show off their clothes and belongings.

It also starts a conflict with the people in the east egg where the money exist and where its different in the west and if anything a fight or something might happein because the east egg thinks they are better then the west because they have money whch aint true.

Another things is Fitgerald brings more color into the sgtory and it reveals more about the characters were more colors reflect on them. People depend on what they have to help them survive instead of being hapy with what they have they alwyas want more.

  4. The story shows that the characters do hide behind their wealth. They hide their true selves in order to keep their reputation. The characters use their wealth as way to fit in with other people.
Almost everywhere in the story someone is wealthy.

The characters use their wealth to also cover up their true selves. They use their money to also show who they really are, too. With all the clothes and things they buy you can get somewhat a look at who they are inside but not their full colors.

The characters in this story can not disentangle themselves from different values. The characters use their money to make friends. Without their wealth they would be nobodies. The money helps them with their social status. People who don't have as much money try to fit in with the wealthy people. It shows how big money was important in that time period.

I agree with Alvin because he is right that the characters use money to hide themsleves.

  5. The Characters in the story do show signs of them hiding themselves. it seems that they dont want to reveal their true selves. new money and old money is used to hide the wealthy characters.
that explains why some characters cant show their true colors. having money during the 1920s was an important value, and people tried to hard just for money.
I agree with jose when he said "Daisy who thinks that just becase she has money that life is good and that nothing can go wrong" because their true selves are hidden behind all their possesions/fancy clothing

  6. The story at this point has put our charecters into many social situaitons. IF u choose to analyze these encounters of charecters you will almost have to immdeaitly agree that social class and welath are a huge factor in how these charecter sinteract and feel around each other. I agree with alvins comment in the fact that the charecters of welath display it through there clothes along wiht how they interact wiht each other. In my opinion a very common theme in the book is socail class and we will see towards the end of the book how much socail class can make a difference

  7. In The Great Gatsby, the characters are surrounded by material. The different characters like Daisy, Gatsby and Tom tends to show the need for Material. The material is experssed through color and how color is the purpose for the material. whether color is being used in the clothing, to the color of the sky.
The social surroundings play a part in the idea of having things. When Daisy spoke and Gatsby could hear the money in her voice, symbolized that there is no love. Daisy came from a high class family and when she is with someone of that class, love is not present.
In Daisy and Gatsby's world, material and money does matter because they are both wrapped around eachother and it also show the connection in Daisy's voice from the time that her voice is of money and material, to the time when it speaks of love.

  8. I agree with Alvin that money can effect the surroundings and it also connects the characters with material. It also links that money can show the social class and Gatsby came from a low class and he made his way to the top with the idea of being in Daisy's social class and also having things that Daisy might like.

  9. The lives of the characters in the novel revolve around money. Daisy for instance, sacrifices love and her happiness to continue living a life of prosperity. Money also corrupts the morals of the characters. Gatsby did criminal activity and took advantage of others in order to become wealthy and impress Daisy. The characters hide their true selves behind their money, especially Daisy. Later on in the story, we learn she is not as innocent as she appears to be. American society during that time lost its morals and became obsessed with materialistic items, which Fitzgerald accurately displays in The Great Gatsby.

  10. I like Faith's interpretation of Gatsby's line, "her voice was full of money." It shows that what went on between them was not love. Money corrupted them and changed the way they viewed each other.

  11. The story shows a similarity between the characters. They all are involved in situations that deal with money. They use money to try and show their wealth but also to hide who they truly are. They also learn that money sometimes isn't something you should rely on to keep you alive.
Characters such as Myrtle, Gatsby, and Daisy used money to hide their true selves. Myrtle used money to buy many clothes to try and shoe she's rich. Daisy uses money to try and hide her marriage problems between her and Tom. And Gatsby used money to somewhat hide his past.
All the characters feel they need money in order to survive. That without it people wouldn't care about them and that their social status would be ruined. But they are later able to see that money sometimes causes loss instead of gain.

I agree with what Alvin's comment when he said the characters use of wealth shows how life was during that time. You see how important it was and how much people relied on it.

  12. The characters in the Great Gatsby, all seem to be hiding who they are. Daisy, out of all the characters is the one I find so fake. She tries to live to society`s standards not her own. Daisy uses her wealth to get by in life. She finds money as an easy way to a great life. We see this side of Daisy when she states she rather have her daughter be pretty than smart.

The value of material is also illustrated in chapter three, Gatsby`s party. Random people fill the house because attending the party is an "in" thing to do. Gatsby hides who he is with the mansion and all the luxuries he has.
Money and social class corrupts people. When money is involved, people (Daisy) risks her own happiness for a comfortable way of living.

Money can be a good thing but in this situation of the novel it is not. Money in Gatsby`s society is like the fee to be part of a game.

  13. I agree with Amanda, that Daisy did not love Gatsby. Daisy is one of the characters I simply do not care for. I believe she is trying to be the victim. She has made her choice and I think in the end she is helping with it, especially since she does not even cry at Gatsby`s death.

  14. The characters in The Great Gatsby hide their true feelings about things and who they really are. The wealth of the characters hide them the most because the characters who are "poor" don't like to say that because others migt look at them differently and put them down. The people who are "rich" like to talk a lot about how much money they have and that brings more attention and likeness to them from other people. The "rich" people get looked upon highly more the the " poor".

I agree with Alvin because he is right when he said that money plays a big part in the who the caharacters really are. Money hides who people are.
