Explain the significance of the following passage: "Gatsby was overwhelmingly aware of the youth and mystery that wealth imprisons and preserves . . ." (157)
What does this passage reveal about the overall themes of the novel? Is Gatsby's youth and mystery preserved by money?
DUE TUESDAY, APRIL 28!
The passage is saying that money causes people to act like children. Money allows these adults to act like children because most of the time they are spoiled. In the book most of the characters were interested in only the gossip that surrounded Gatsby. They were not curious about what the real story was. People of money have a way that they believe a person should act in public. I believe that these thoughts on behavior allowed Gatsby to hide his past.
ReplyDeleteThroughout the novel, many characters lose their train of thought or their sense in mind. They lose themselves because of the illusion of money. Money and wealth causes people to lose themselves and become differnt people. Fitzgerald uses color imagery to disguise the wealth within characters and illusions. Fitzgerald does so because he wants the readers to discover what the plot really is about and who the characters really are and what they are thinkjng about.
ReplyDeleteMoney in the novel reveals most of the themes because many characters are blinded by wealth that they become different people. Daisy first seems to love Gatsby, but after his death, she did not care. It may seem that Daisy only care for herself and her wealth.
Gatsby youth and mystery is not based off of money because his whole life was about trying to have his dream turn into reality. Gatsby dewspire for Daisy was all based on Gatsby's level of achieving the correct materials to impress her and win her from Tom. Gatsby is one of the characters that is not being controlled by money and wealth. During 1920s money and wealth was needed, but for Gatsby, all he wanted was his dream to be fufilled.
this qoute is stating that money can basically conrtol your whole life. That no matter who you are or what you may do in life you will still be obssed with money and how much you have or how much money you may lack. This qoute states something we can already know just form exsiting as humans and that is that we are slaves to the materialistic world and there is nothing we can do about.
ReplyDeleteThis quote reveals that money and wealth are like the American Dream, though once you have this, you are imprisoned in it. The money and the wealth kept Gatsby's real dream alive. He threw parties to attract all these people to him and eventually attracted Daisy. Gatsby had always loved Daisy, ever since they were younger. Now, that he had all this money he was sure that Daisy would love him. Money is what kept his hopes up.
ReplyDeleteDaisy is an example of imprisonment of wealth. I think she really loves Gatsby. I also think that she has gotten caught up and too comfortable with her materialistic life style.
This passage tell of two things. How Gatsby was full of youth and also with out the love of his life; he is nothing. Gatsby is an intreseting character. Gatsby shows a longing and compassion for Daisy and in his life he needs her. it is as if Daisy completes him. It also says in a way that if Gatsby can't have Daisy, then nothing else is important. Money also keeps Gatsby alive. When he gave the parties, he was showing the social class that he so longed to be in when he first met Daisy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nicole that Daisy is an example of imprisonment of wealth. Throught out the book, she speaks through matrial. she does not speak through love. I believe she speaks like that out of fear of possible losing her social class and also losing her material. With out them, she is lost.
Money and success is the American Dream. In the novel, Gatsby represents success and Daisy money. Although they both have what many sought after, they don't seem truly happy.
ReplyDeleteGatsby became successful in order to impress Daisy and once he had her, he realized she wasn't who he thought she was. Daisy in turn, realized that a wealthy lifestyle was more important than love and happiness, so she sacrificed that, along with her morality, to stay rich.
The two meant to preserve themselves in success and wealth, but became imprisoned instead.
This passage is significance is that it shows what money can really do to a person. It reveals that money can not only cause people to lose things but to also hide themselves behind it. Throughout the novel thats what many characters did either to show they were rich even when they weren't or to try and hide who they truly were as a person. Gatsby was one character that I think hid behind money but also gossip as well. Because of this i think his youth and mystery was preserved as well as his past.
ReplyDeleteMoney can cause a person to change who they are. Money is a mask to the faces of people.
ReplyDeleteA teenager is full of youth and mystery simply because they are always trying to find out who they truly are. However when money is involed the youth is forgotten, and the person only has the identity of Money. Money can make a person become a prisioner in his own life, a prisioner of lies.
I believe the passage is revealing that the theme relating to money is how Gatsby inherited it. In in his youth years, Gatsby wasn't rich at all and now that he grew older he is rich. But now that he is older, he also acts mysterious becuase he never really discovered who he truly is because the money interupted and affected is growing up.
ReplyDeleteI believe Gatsby is trying to say that before when he was a youth he didn't have money. And now he has money its like a mystery. It also shows how knowing you have money can change your life dramatically.
ReplyDeleteThis means that money can make people change their ways and act like a child and want more and more. Also the youngness can mean that they can do whatever they want and also since Gatsby didnt have money he probadly dosent like people who has money so he hates people he doesnt know just because something he didnt have.
ReplyDeleteYoung people are always trying to figure out who they really are as a person. Money is like a comfort aone for people especially young people. When young people get a hold of money, it just makes it that much difficult for that person to find out who they really are. When a young person who comes a hold of money they think they own everything and never find themselves and still won't find themselves until the middle of their life.
